During the 2019 Washington State rally in Kennewick, WA, I was sitting around the firepit talking with fellow Grand Design owners. We were lamenting the fact that for many of us, we would soon be putting our RVs away for the winter. It would be several months before we would be able to get together at another rally. Several of us also liked to cruise. Hmmmm...this gave me an idea and the first Grand Design Owners Cruise - Rally @ Sea was created shortly thereafter. This would give Grand Design owners across North America the opportunity to rendezvous at sea while our RVs were stored for the winter, for those who full-time and wanted a break, or for those who wanted a different kind of rally experience.
I located a travel agent familiar with handling group cruises and the plans were made to sail to the Eastern Caribbean in January of 2021. We quickly sold out our cabins and even expanded the number available which we also filled.
As we all know, COVID-19 struck in early 2020. We kept our fingers crossed that by the following January, things would settle down and we would be able to cruise. At the year went on, many cruises were cancelled through the end of November. This coupled along with border closures led to many within the group to cancel. After some discussion, we added a cruise for January 2022 which was small but successful.
Being an RV'er doesn't mean we can't cruise and we will continue to have a Rally @ Sea as long as owners want to do this.
The cruise is limited to current Grand Design owners. We have the support of Grand Design RV in our efforts as a water-based rally. We'll have a couple on-board events and a group shore excursion. Plus we will have exclusive Rally @ Sea swag. There is also a Facebook group just for the cruise group.
